ABOUT
Rebecca Kennedy, PhD
Licensed Psychologist
I believe that we are all works in progress. Throughout our lives, we encounter experiences that challenge us, relationships that shape us, and circumstances we never expected. Sometimes we need a place to make sense of life experiences, understand ourselves more deeply, and consider what we want the next part of our lives to look like.
I have worked with people from every walk of life and enjoy learning each person’s story. In my previous practice I took Tricare resulting in extensive experience working with individuals who have served in the military and their families. I also had a lot of self-pay clients, often small business owners or people who worked in medical fields including physicians, dentists, and other counselors.
For more than 25 years, I have had the privilege of working with adults as they navigate those questions and make meaningful changes in their lives.
MY APPROACH
When you don't know what to do next.
You may come to counseling because something in your life isn't going well, something painful has happened, or life simply isn't unfolding the way you hoped. You may have tried everything you know to do and still feel frustrated, scared, sad, or unsure how to cope or make a change.
I help you make sense of what you are feeling. Together, we sort through what has happened and what has brought you to this place. Sometimes the work is about making a difficult decision or changing patterns that are causing problems. Sometimes it is about healing from trauma or loss. Other times it is about figuring out what you want your life to look like and how to move toward it.
When the world as you knew it has been shattered, we can't always put it back exactly as it was. Sometimes it takes time to heal, and you need support along the way. Be patient with yourself, but don't lose hope. There are many paths in this world, and I can help you rebuild a world that feels meaningful to you again.
I work alongside you through that process—listening, encouraging, helping you make sense of your feelings, and supporting you as you make change. Helping you find relief, healing, or peace and helping you move toward the life you want.
EXPERIENCE & TRAINING
More than 25 years of experience.
I have been a licensed psychologist for more than 25 years. I began my career in college health but as I took on more and more administrative responsibility it moved me away from my clinical practice. In 2009 I began a part-time private practice to continue doing this work that I feel called to. In 2019 I moved to Birmingham and I am delighted to be able to continue this work here. Over the course of my career, I have worked with people facing a wide range of concerns, with my private practice focused on individual and couples counseling, trauma treatment, and helping people navigate significant life transitions and change.
I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, my BS in Psychology from George Mason University, and have advanced training in EMDR. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to providing thoughtful, evidence-based care while recognizing that each person brings a different history, set of circumstances, and hopes for their life.
